Sizing Tips
All designers have their own size charts, which are provided below. Do
not assume that you are your normal dress size. Dresses are made-to-order, which means that they are produced when you order them. Nothing is kept in stock. Dresses are made according to each designer's dress patterns which correspond to the sizing charts below; they are not custom made to your body measurements.
We highly recommend that you go to a trusted tailor/seamstress to get measured. However, if that is not possible, here are some tips to help you determine your size. If you are unsure of which size to order, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@shopjoielle.com for advice. Most women will still need alterations because every body is different and a tailor can fit the
dress perfectly to your unique shape and ensure that you look your
best.
How to Measure:
Bust: Wearing the undergarment that you plan to wear with the dress, measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest, keeping tape snug and level across your back. Do not use your bra/cup size.
Waist: Measure snugly around your natural waistline.
Hip: Stand with your feet together and measure snugly around the fullest part of your hips.
Hollow to Hem: Measure from hollow of front of neck down to where you want the hem of your dress to end.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
- Dessy Group dresses are constructed to be 1-1.5" bigger than on the numbers on the chart, EXCEPT for the bust measurement of strapless styles which are built according to the size chart to ensure a snug fit.
- Additionally, There is around 1" total of fabric that can be let out from the side inseams of the dress except strapless styles may have little to no extra inseam fabric in the bust depending on the construction of bodice.
- Sizing Guide refers to your body measurements, NOT dress measurements. Please make sure measuring tape is wrapped snugly around your body to get an accurate body measurement.
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SIZE:
- Dessy Group sizes are similar to regular off-the-rack U.S. clothing sizes. If you find a discrepancy between your regular street size and the size determined by this chart, please email us your measurements and your usual size and we would be happy to assist in selecting the best size for you.
- If a body measurement falls between 2 sizes (ie. your waist is 27.5, which is in between size 6 and size 8), round down to the smaller if difference to the smaller size is less than 1.5".
- If your measurements vary greatly (i.e. bust 4, waist 10, hip 6), select 1 size down from the biggest size to bring the dress closer to the rest of your body (i.e. size 8).There is around 1" of fabric that can be let out from the side in-seams in addition to the 1.5” extra room already built into the dress.
- Extra length is suggested for anyone 5’8” or taller. Please check skirt length chart below to determine if you should choose this option.

STYLE-SPECIFIC TIPS:
- Strapless styles do not have ease of movement in bust. Assume actual bust measurement for sizing.
- Full skirted styles use bust and waist measurements only since the hip area is not fitted.
- Empire waist styles with flowing skirts have additional ease in waist and hip.
- Maternity styles use bust measurement only, and it is recommended to size up if you are later in your pregnancy when the dress will be worn.

- Maternity styles use bust measurement only, and it is recommended to size up if you are later in your pregnancy when the dress will be worn. In order notes, please provide measurements for size verification, and include the measurement below your bust, where an empire waist would naturally sit.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR SIZE:
- Joanna August sizes run similar to off-the-rack U.S. clothing sizes. If there is a big discrepancy between your regular street size and the size determined by this chart, please email us your measurements and your usual size and we would be happy to assist in selecting the best size for you.
- If your measurements fall between two sizes or vary greatly, select the size that corresponds to your largest measurement. Refer to style-specific tips below for exceptions to this guideline.
- Extra length is not available.

STYLE-SPECIFIC TIPS:
- For elastic waistband styles (8th Avenue, Lincoln, State Street, and Union), determine size primarily by bust and waist measurements since the hip area of the dress is not fitted.
- For wrap waist styles (DC and Newbury), determine size primarily by bust measurement since the waist and hip areas of the dress are not fitted.
- Full-length Newbury and DC styles now have 4" less fabric width on each side of the skirt for a smoother look which is an update from our photos and sample loaner dresses.
